For bermuda and zoysia lawns, May to early August is ideal when warm-season grasses are actively growing. For fescue lawns, both spring and fall work well—fall coincides with overseeding season, while spring applications help improve nutrient availability during the stressful summer months.

Should I aerate before topdressing?

It doesn’t matter—you can aerate before or after topdressing, and we don’t combine them into a single service visit. Our goal with topdressing is to apply a thin layer of compost and sand mix on the surface to add organic matter for turf health. The common belief that you must aerate immediately before topdressing actually applies to golf courses, where they apply 3-5x more material and focus primarily on drainage improvement rather than soil health.

How thick should the topdressing layer be?

We typically apply 1/4 to 1/2 inch of material per application. Thicker layers can smother grass, while thinner applications may not provide enough benefit. For lawns that need significant soil improvement, we recommend multiple light applications over successive seasons rather than one heavy application.
